The Honda Civic has been Canada's best-selling car for twenty-three years now. When it first hit the market in 1973, some people made fun of it, but that didn't last. Just ten years later, people were realizing what a great purchase it was.
Its position only grew stronger in the years that followed, and by the 1990s, it had established itself as the nation's most popular choice in its class.
In 2016, we were treated to the 10th generation model which proved to be the best in history. This year, we're presented with the 11th generation, and from what we've seen so far, the 2022 Honda Civic has everything it takes to surpass the one it replaces and remain the best-selling car in the country.

In fact, once Honda unveils the entire lineup, we'll have four different Civics to look forward to. So far, two have been introduced, the sedan and the hatchback. Coming up are the two sporty versions, the Si and the Type R. We're going to focus here on the unveiled configurations by looking at what each one offers in terms of mechanics, but also in terms of equipment and layout.
For this new run, each of the two variants will have the same engine. With the sedan, the naturally aspirated 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, which offers 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque, will find a home under the hood of the LX, EX and Sport versions. In the engine compartment of the Touring model, a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder will come standard. It's rated at 180 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque.
With the sedan, only a continuously variable transmission (CVT) can be paired with these two engines. With the hatchback, the CVT will be offered, as well as a six-speed manual transmission. In fact, the latter will be available on all three trims of the model: LX, Sport and Sport Touring. As for the engine layout, the LX version gets the 2-litre block, the other two the 1.5-liter engine.
Once inside, the equipment is obviously going to vary according to trim levels, but right from the basic lineup, Honda delivers the essentials to make your days enjoyable. The equipment includes a seven-inch colour touchscreen, Siri Eyes Free, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto apps, push-button start, heated front seats, a partially digital instrument cluster, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, as well as LED headlights.
Most importantly, you'll enjoy a less cramped environment. In fact, the design of the 2022 Honda Civic had a very specific objective: to focus on the driver's experience. Everything has been simplified and this new streamlined layout is effective; everything falls into place. Furthermore, the visual presentation is absolutely stunning, with the air vents beautifully integrated behind a grill that acts as a decorative strip from one end of the dashboard to the other.
The driving position is also perfect, and the adjustments allow us to quickly find our comfort. On the road, the 2022 new Civic is a charm to drive. Comfort, handling, general attitude, everything is spot on. The increased rigidity of the chassis, both in terms of torsion and bending, is quite noticeable when you take on a winding road. Truly, Honda has done its homework with this new model.
With the improvements made, and the retention of mechanical assets that make it a great value, the 2022 new Honda Civic promises to be a hit... and to remain Canada's best-selling car.
